What Can Angelfish Training Teach Me?
ANGELFISH TRAINING all-day workshops (see times below) are designed and taught by two dynamic instructors, each with more than 20 years of physical, occupational, and aquatic therapy experience. These workshops have been created to help therapists and swim instructors treat and teach children with a wide variety of unique sensory motor dysfunctions and physical impairments, including (but not limited to) such diagnoses as: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, PDD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, and Sensory Processing Disorders.
In these workshops, students first watch videos of actual therapy or swim sessions in a classroom setting, in order to learn the valuable concepts, techniques, and strategies needed to work effectively with special needs children. But remember to bring your bathing suit! Because after this, students jump into the pool alongside the instructors for hands-on practice of the concepts they’ve learned in the videos.
Once skills have been practiced for individual children, our instructors will share with students their research, knowledge, and techniques for successfully handling therapy or swim lessons for groups of children. Then the day wraps up with a discussion of paperwork issues (like insurance letters, daily notes, evaluations, release forms), and finally, an evaluation by workshop students of the Angelfish Trainers.
At this time, Angelfish Therapy offers two different workshops:
Totally Treatment: In this workshop, physical and occupational therapists will learn innovative and effective techniques to offer treatment as an aquatic therapist for children, by taking full advantage of the buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, and vestibular stimulation offered by a pool environment. Let our experienced instructors show you how we combine sensory integration, core strength, endurance, primitive reflex integration, and social skills to treat many problem areas at once, all in a fun and challenging environment for children.
In addition, therapists will: 1) gain knowledge about how to perform a pediatric aquatic evaluation and to develop an individualized treatment plan; 2) gain an increased repertoire of pediatric aquatic treatment ideas and handling techniques for individual therapy, as well as for small groups; 3) learn to understand the uses and applications of aquatic equipment with the pediatric population; and 4) learn how to develop effective aquatic treatments to complement current land based initiatives.
Swim Whisperers®: Based on our innovative Swim Whisperers protocol, this workshop is designed for swim instructors, parents, swim school directors, PE teachers, fitness instructors, or anybody faced with a child or children who experience little to no success with traditional teaching methods — in particular, those with mild to severe sensory issues, problems with motor skills, difficulty processing information, attention issues, or any other condition that might physically or psychologically impede the process of learning to swim.
In some cases, the obstacle may be something as simple as a child who is unwilling to put their head under water, or who is terrified to let go of the side of the pool. Our experienced instructors have seen it all, and will share with you the innovative, therapy-based techniques needed to turn kids into confident and independent swimmers in less time than you thought possible.
